At the Way of the Shadow Martial Arts Academy, we believe that a belt only has meaning if it is earned. To us, earning rank requires much more than just showing up; students must demonstrate proficiency in technique under pressure and continuous improvement of one's skills, fitness, and character. Below is a general overview of our rank & promotion system for students ages 16 and older:
Kyu & Kyu Testing
A kyu is a black "stripe" that wraps around the end of a student's belt that symbolizes achievement and marks the progression of the martial artist. Students earn one kyu per month by demonstrating proficiency in a particular month's techniques during a kyu test held at the end of each month. If the student passes the kyu test, they have earned and will receive a kyu for that particular month. Monthly kyu tests are free.
Kyu are awarded in the order of red, brown, and black stacked on top of each other. Once a black kyu is awarded, additional kyu will be awarded on a new stack.
Belt & Belt Testing Students must earn 9 kyu (3 black kyu) in order to test for their next belt. Once eligible, students must undergo and pass a belt exam that tests the student's technique proficiency (last 9 months of material), mental toughness, and physical fitness. Testing format and requirements differ for advanced ranks. Belt tests are scheduled on an as needed basis. In order to cover the cost of materials, time, and graduation ceremony, there is a $45 belt test fee for all levels.
Attendance Requirements Beginner Students = 6 Beginner Class attendances per month Advanced Students = 6 Advanced Class + 2 Beginner Class attendances per month
Students must sign in to receive credit for attendance. Kyu test day may count as an attendance. Seminar, fitness, and sparring classes are optional and do not count towards total attendance. Private lessons can be used to make up for absences. In the event of a shortened month due to dojo closure, attendance requirements may be lessened.
Advanced Class Once a student earns a rank of Purple Belt, they will undergo a performance evaluation by instructors to determine if they are ready for the Advanced Class. If the Beginner Student meets the requirements, they will be invited to join the Advanced Students. Some of the requirements include: technique performance, consistency of training, performance on past kyu/belt tests, and technique comprehension. Advanced students are encouraged to attend the Beginner class to keep their foundation skills sharp and to assist in teaching the lower ranking students.
