At the Way of the Shadow Martial Arts Academy, we believe that a belt only has meaning if it is earned. To us, earning rank requires much more than just showing up; students must demonstrate proficiency in technique under pressure and continuous improvement of one's skills, fitness, and character. Below is a general overview of our rank & promotion system for students ages 4 to 15:
Kyu & Kyu Testing
A kyu is a black "stripe" that wraps around the end of a student's belt that symbolizes achievement and marks the progression of the martial artist. Students earn one kyu per month by proficiently demonstrating a particular month's techniques during a kyu test held at the end of each month. If the student passes the kyu test, they have earned and will receive a kyu for that particular month. Monthly kyu tests are free.
Belt & Belt Testing Students must earn 4 Black kyu's in order to receive or test for their next belt must earn 8 kyu Once eligible, students in the Little or Junior Ninja class must undergo and pass a belt exam that tests the student's technique proficiency, mental toughness, and physical fitness. Mini/Micro Ninja are not required to take a belt test. Belt tests are tentatively scheduled for every other month. In order to cover the cost of materials, time, and graduation ceremony, there is a $50 belt test fee for Little/Junior Ninja and a $35 for Mini Ninja for all belt levels.
Attendance Requirements Mini/Little/Junior Ninja /Adults= 6 attendance credits per month
Students must sign in to receive credit for attendance. Kyu test day may count as an attendance. Sparring days are optional and do not count towards total attendance. Private lessons can be used to make up for absences.
Beyond the Mat Students are also required to complete a monthly "Beyond the Mat" assignment due on the kyu test day. The assignment requires students to write about how they have demonstrated a specific character trait outside of the academy. The Beyond the Mat program is designed to build better character in our students on and off the training floor that will be carried with them throughout their entire lives. Advanced Class Once a student earns a rank of Blue Belt, they will undergo a performance evaluation by instructors to determine if they are ready for the Advanced Class. If the Beginner Student successfully meets the requirements, they will be invited to join the Advanced Students. Some of the requirements include: technique performance, consistency of training, maturity, age, performance on past belt tests, and technique comprehension.
